Mold Misconceptions – The mold industry is still evolving and there is new information being discovered everyday. Our responsibility as Certified Mold professionals is to stay up-to-date on this new information so that we can provide our clients with the most effective methods to solve their problems, all while educating them in the process.

Due to the fact that there is still a lot of unknown information about certain types of mold and their affect of individuals, there are many misconceptions out there regarding mold. For example, not all molds are dangerous and just because it is black, does not mean it is a “toxic mold.” In fact, there are thousands of different kinds of molds and there are only certain types that are considered allergenic. The only way to know exactly what types of mold are present is to perform mold testing.

Common Mold Misconceptions:

  • Black mold is toxic and bad It is important to remember that the only way to know for sure the type of mold is to perform mold testing. Mold colonizes in a variety of colors including: black, brown, white, green and yellow. Just because mold is a certain color does not necessarily mean it is allergenic or unhealthy mold.
  • Toxic Mold The term “toxic mold” is not accurate. While certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins), the molds themselves are not toxic, or poisonous. (Center for Disease Control) Molds can, however, be allergenic and cause allergic reactions in certain individuals or trigger mold allergies.
  • Mold v. Fungus Mold is actually a type of fungi. All molds are fungi, but not all fungi are mold. (Occupational Safety & Health Administration)
